North by Northwest (1959)

*ing: Cary Grant, Eva Marie Saint and James Mason
Genre: Drama, Crime, Adventure

Oh I love Alfred Hitchcock and I was blessed to get to watch 'North By Northwest'. Once again Alfred Hitchcock scores :) Makes me a happy man :) Loved this movie for it's style, entertainment value, well timed suspense, mix of spies, counterspies and lovers, truly thrilling moments, action, cinematographic brilliance and more. No wonder this is one movie almost all critics have given it a 100%. Infact I was actually surprised to see a 100% ranking on Rottentomatoes for this movie. I doubt if I have come across any other movie that 3 figure rating. I guess that gives you a pretty decent idea of what to expect from this movie. Speaking of expectations well ... the story goes something like this ... a advertising guy is mistaken for a spy and a fantastic game of cat and mouse chase takes off providing you with 130+ minutes of quality entertainment. Guys and gals hook or crook get your hands on this 1959 movie and watch it, if you are still unfamiliar wiht Alfred Hitchcock and his works this movie will ensure you become a fan of Alfred Hitchcock.

Airplane! (1980)

*ing: Robert Hays, Julie Hagerty and Leslie Nielsen
Genre: LOL Comedy, Romance ... trust me ... when I say LOL Comedy ... I really mean it :)

You had the most miserable day in the office. You just got ditched by your girl or boy. Your manhood simply fell off while jacking off. Your entire family died in a car crash. Infact nothing went right its the most gloomiest day, you are feeling suicidal what do you do. You turn on your TV and turn on 'Airplane!' the most craziest, most insane, most whacky comedy I've ever come across from early 1980's. The movie is essentially a spoof and I have a feeling almost all spoof movie that have surfaced in Hollywood must've used Airplane! as a reference template at some point or the other. What I really like the absence of a plot as in a strong script ... infact you realize there is none :) yet the movie keep you interested in the entire 88 minute flight ... a flight you wish you never took in the first place ;-) I really don't care who directed this movie, the names seem so unfamiliar ... whoever they are ... I am sure they must've have plotted this whole wasted movie in a bar sitting on bar stools while they were getting high on grass and beer and getting wasted :) Truly LOL comedy :) You really gotta watch this one, it's crude, it has a lot of rough edges but what the heck it's a 1980 movie that means it was produced in the late 70's :)

How to Marry a Millionaire (1953)

*ing: Marilyn Monroe, Betty Grable and Lauren Bacall
Genre: Romance, Comedy, Drama

3 women form an alliance and move to an upmarket apartment in Manhattan district in the hope of luring Millionaire men, seeking a short cut to money, easy life and probably fame. Great plan but does it work???? Will they find their Millionaires, how will they know their men are not lying, how will they know what their men are really worth? Well laid out, well scripted, well directed and good performances by the trio comprising of Marilyn Monroe, Betty Grable and Lauren Bacall present a truly worth watching entertainer. Apparently this was the fist 'Cinemascope' movie which in 1953 was a big deal. Music is great, love the 50's music, love the enjoyable escapist experience of the early Hollywood movies. This one is a must must must watch, it may not be best Marilyn Monroe starring movies but this one is truly an enjoyable 90 odd min affair.

Shor in the City (2011)

*ing: Tusshar Kappor, Sendhil Ramamurthy, Nikhil Dwivedi & Pitobash Tripathi
Genre: Dark Humor, Drama

Thanks to my friend Shilpa, who insisted I watch this movie, I would've skipped this movie quite easily for I had not heard much about this movie and for some reason I was unaware of it's release dates and it's fate at box office. Anyway, thanks to my friend I discovered one of the finest dark humor movies in Bollywood. 3 individual stories running parallel to each other over the 9 days of Ganesh Chaturthi festivities. Each story will eventually cross paths with one another over the 9 days. Amazingly well scripted, brilliant direction and awesome performances by the relatively unknown cast. Sendhil Ramamurthy is raw and sure has the looks and the talent .. fit in real well infact even Tusshar Kappor who I personally rate as a hopeless actor does a decent job. Seriouly guys this is a terrific movie. If you been ignorant like me for whatever reasons shun your ignorance and watch this movie it's quite a breed apart and frankly ... how many dark humor movies does one really come across?? You can count them on your fingers and chances are you may need only 5 fingers.

Changeling (2008)

*ing: Angelina Jolie, John Malkovich, Micheal Kelly, Colm Feore
Genre: Drama, Mystery, Thriller

Starts off by saying this movie is based on true events. If that is really true ... WOW!! I really admire the superwoman strength of Ms. Christine Collins (played by Angelina Jolie). By far one of the best Angelina movies and by far one of best movies directed by Clint Eastwood in my opinion. Critics may disagree a bit over there .... but I say this is the best. A story of one really determined never say die and never give up hope mother, her tale of fighting all odds and overcoming the biggest obstacles and single handedly brining in a revolution in the quest to find her missing son. The movie spans events spread out from 1928 to something like 1935 the art director and his team have done an excellent job in producing one of the best period feels. Direction by Clint Eastwood is nothing really great but intense performance by Angelina Jolie and a fantastic cinematography makes this Mystery Drama a truly brilliant movie to watch. Please watch this movie for Angelina's acting, art direction, cinematography, script and well the direction too. Last not the least .... Angelina looks awesome :)

Irreversible (2002)

Irréversible (original title)

*ing: Monica Bellucci, Vincent Cassel and Albert Dupontel
Genre: Drama, Crime, Thriller

Disturbing, very disturbing but ... man ... what an awesome movie. One of a kind of script, I really wonder what Gaspar Noé the Writer and Director must have been smoking or tripping on while he was writing and directing this movie. A very straight forward story of one traumatic night unfolds in a reverse chronoligical manner. Basically you see the climax first and the movie rolls back to the first scene. Having said that and done that Gaspar Noé manages to keep you biting your nails wondering what next and how and why. Some of the scenes are very graphic but trust me ... it is those very graphic and traumatic scenes that gives depth to this movie and make it worth watching, worth remembering and singing all praise. The weird direction style and the unsteady camera work for the first 20 odd minutes creates a brilliant impact. I say standing ovation to Gaspar Noé for presenting us with one of a kind movie that no amount of words can do justice. +vely worth watching, you can not afford to miss such movies.
